I love portable applications for two major reasons. First, I can bring my favorite applications around in a USB flash drive without having to take my laptop with me. So I can create a web page or edit a picture literally anywhere with a computer. This comes handy traveling with my wife as we used to bring two laptop with us. Now we only need one!
Another advantage for portable applications is security and protection of personal data. When I browse the Internet on someone else’s computer, I will leave a history behind. Not that I always have something sensitive to hide, I just feel uncomfortable that other people can easily see where I have been on the Internet. I don’t have such problem with a portable web browser. It will keep my surfing history only on my own USB flash drive, not on the computer I have used. That suits me well.
There are a few good sites for free portable applications.
1. Portable Application (http://www.portableapps.com). You will find loads of portable applications including OpenOffice (compatible with Microsoft Office), Firefox (web browser), Thunderbird (email client), Sunbird (calendar/task manager), ClamWin Portable (antivirus), 7-Zip Portable (file compression), KeePass (password manager), GIMP Portable (photo editor), VLC Media Player, Audacity Portable (audio editor), Mac-on-stick (Mac OS version 7), and many many more …
2. kikizas.net (http://www.kikizas.net/en/usbapps.html)
3. The Portable Freeware Collection
(http://portablefreeware.com/index.php?so=p)
I will come back with more portable applications.
